Literacy Navigator © 2012 Common Core

Overview

Literacy Navigator © 2012 Common Core Edition addresses the rigor of the Common Core State Standards. Literacy Navigator consists of a series of lessons that reflect the latest research on reading comprehension in which students learn strategies for reading informational text. With flexible modules that tackle the demands of Common Core State Standards, students will develop the necessary skills that take them beyond their independent reading level.

Used as a supplement or as an intervention, Literacy Navigator is made up of five different levels, with 30 Foundations Lessons, 15 Word Study Lessons, and pre- and post- test assessments:

  • Level A: Environmental Citizenship (Grade 4)
  • Level B: Endangered Species (Grade 5)
  • Level C: Habitats (Grade 6)
  • Level D: Extreme Weather (Grade 7)
  • Level E: Adaptations (Grade 8)

Designed for grades 4-8+, Literacy Navigator is carefully matched to the levels of both the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) and the Qualitative Assessment of Text Difficulty. This modular supplemental reading program helps students succeed at high-stakes reading assessments. Each 45- to 50-minute lesson includes an introduction, work time, guided practice, and reflection.

Literacy Navigator is the first program to address these issues comprehensively. This innovative approach can help struggling students:

  • Build vocabulary using Tier 2 and 3 words used by mature language readers
  • Focus on understanding connecting words, tracing pronoun references, and understanding substitute words and phrases
  • Use graphic organizers to illustrate relationships between ideas
  • Reflect on the text meaning
  • Develop a reasoned understanding of text by using discussion to highlight differences in understanding and address misconceptions
  • Convey the meaning of what they have read by recasting it in their own words
  • Build background knowledge by exposing them to increasingly complex texts that address an overarching concept
  • Develop the ability to think critically and evaluate information
