The program supports teaching and learning of the California English–Language Arts Content Standards. Language Central for California is an English–language development program that provides students with an additional hour of instruction each day. Calle de la Lectura Para California is the Spanish version of Reading Street for California. The Essential Question, or Big Question, guides instruction for the unit as students learn new concepts, literature, and skills.
The student editions for Grades 1–6 include the Big Question, Picture it! literacy posters, main text selections, paired selections, and activities for vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension such as Think, Talk, and Write. Students use the student editions as a resource and refer to the Picture it! posters to grasp literary ideas. They use the main text and paired selections to practice their target reading skills. Also, students complete activities that follow the texts to develop word knowledge and comprehension skills.
